Cheers to English Wine Week

Did you know 17th to the 25th June marks English Wine Week? It’s the perfect opportunity to explore and taste local wine right on your door step. England may not be known as a wine capital, but growing and creating wine was actually brought over by the Romans… Let’s discover some history, and how we at Housel Bay are raising a glass to English Wine Week.

Cheers to English Wine Week

  1. The history of English Wine Week

As mentioned, English wine all started with the Romans who brought it over in 43BC. The Doomsday book refers to over 42 vineyards in southern England at the end of the 11th century! Who knew we’d been making wine that long?

In recent years, English vineyards produce high-quality, award-winning wines, particularly sparkling. When it comes to Wine Week, it takes place yearly at the start of summer, when flowering begins in the vineyards. it was created by the “Wines of Great Britain” organisation to dedicate time to celebrate English wines across the U.K. In the hopes that during this week, vineyards in the U.K will host tours and tastings, while local establishments (such as us) make it a point to pair English wines with delicious food.

  2. How we’re celebrating

To celebrate English Wine Week we are offering one of our favourite English sparkling wines by the glass. So you can toast to the wonderful English wine scene with us! Our chosen English sparkling is by Kingscote, in East Grindstead. It is an exceptional expression of an original method English sparkling wine. This fine and elegant sparking wine is suited for every occasion. It has beautiful seasonal aromas of elderflower, gooseberry and grassy notes. The palate is dry, fresh and lively. The perfect aperitif before your Tasting Menu experience at Fallowfields, or as our Head Chef said himself “an utterly delicious” pairing with our new Cornish sardines, which will be one of our new dishes on our summer menu at The Terrace.

English Wine Week is the perfect excuse to have a glass of sparkling in the glorious sunshine…don’t miss out! Walk ins are welcome, or book here.
