Marconi’s Afternoon Tea.

In 1840 England, Anna Maria Russell introduced a simple yet revolutionary idea, seeking a remedy for the “sinking feeling” between lunch and a late dinner. By the late 19th century this had evolved into a beloved British social ritual.

At Housel Bay, this spirit of connection is deepened by the legacy of Guglielmo Marconi, who made history whilst staying with us. In 1901 Marconi sent the first transatlantic wireless signal from Cornwall to Newfoundland, laying the foundations of modern wireless communication.

At Housel Bay, our Afternoon Tea reflects the elegance and spirit of that era; thoughtful craftsmanship, a sense of occasion, and the pleasure of unhurried conversation.

An assortment of afternoon tea items including scones, finger sandwiches, chocolate mousse desserts, a glass of champagne, and jars of jam and clotted cream on a wooden table.

Our Menu.

Our new Afternoon Tea menu for two (or more), celebrates Cornish produce, from Newlyn smoked salmon sandwiches with cucumber & creme fraiche to local Davidstow Cornish cheddar with caramelised onion chutney. Accompanied with exquisite sweet treats such as our dark cherry and Valrhona chocolate petit gateaux or our raspberry and vanilla Victoria slice. Not forgetting homemade scones with Cornish clotted cream and strawberry jam served with a pot of English breakfast tea, or Cornish coffee.

Bookings.

Our Cornish Cream Tea, which includes homemade scones, Cornish clotted cream & strawberry jam with a pot of English Breakfast tea is available every day, between 10am - 5pm, no booking required, £11.50 per person.

Our Afternoon Tea is available Monday - Saturday between 3pm - 4:30pm. Please note, we require 24 hours notice for bookings, and a minimum of two guests, £30 per person.

Unfortunately we cannot offer gluten free/vegan Afternoon Tea.

“Afternoon Tea at Housel Bay was a treat of pure indulgence. Delicious well-filled finger sandwiches, scrumptious scones with Cornish cream and jam and a gobsmackingly good selection of patisseries. Plus a seemingly endless supply of tea. Complete bliss.”
