Walk This May | Celebrating National Walking Month

Did you know May marks National Walking Month? It’s designed to be the perfect opportunity to ditch the car for a healthier you and the planet, walk instead. Walking as we know not only benefits our plant, reducing greenhouse emissions, traffic congestion, and improving our air quality, but also our own health; both physical and mental. But sometimes it can be hard to motivate ourselves to get out on a walk during our busy schedules. So this May, discover some inspiration to celebrate National Walking Month with us.

Celebrating National Walking Month;

  1. Walk & Talk

Why not organise a walk and talk with friends? Walking doesn’t have to be alone… Why not gather a group, plan your route, and head outdoors, and of course talk, gossip, or pick a topic to discuss as you go. From moving your book club on the go, or even a work meeting!

2. A Sponsored Walk

May is a time to promote the benefits of walking for physical health, mental wellbeing, and enjoying the fresh air outdoors. What better way to celebrate than by organising your own walk and raising money for a cause close to your heart? Discover some of our local charities for ideas.

3. 20 Mins a Day In May

It may not sound like much, but 20 minutes a day in May is the perfect mantra to get the walking shoes on. The weather is getting warmer, the evenings are drawing out, and it’s a free, gentle, low-impact activity that requires no special training or equipment. Almost everyone can do it, anywhere, any time. Live in The Lizard? Here are our favourite local walks for inspiration.

4. Support The Trail

It’s the 50th Anniversary of the South West Coastal Path Association! They work tirelessly to protect, look after and raise constant awareness of this amazing and beautiful trail to millions of people every year. The birthday year kicks off in National Walking Month (right now) with a 50th Anniversary Relay Trailblazer Walk across the full 630 miles of the Path.  The Walk starts at each end of the Trail and ends with a major Photographic Exhibition in Plymouth’s Royal William Yard in June. If you live locally, or are visiting, why not join in? For more information click here.

We’d love to see you out on your walks this May! Why not tag us @houselbay and show off your walks and share what inspired you and #walkthismay.
