The Great Bird Migration at Lizard Point

The season of autumn is upon us! It’s a particularly wondrous time for us bird lovers. So get your walking shoes on, wrap up, look up, and wonder at the sight of the great bird migration at Lizard Point.

The Great Bird Migration at Lizard Point;

  • Why is October an exciting time for birds?

In October we witness the migration of birds. We say goodbye to our summer visitors, such as swallows and swifts, leaving us to spend the winter in the warmer climate of Africa. But also, we say hello at the arrival of birds from further north, such as whooper swans, redwings and fieldfares, fleeing the chilly winds of the arctic’s winter.

‘At this time of year, listen and look up – the tsks, tsips, tseeps, chacks and chissicks you hear might be flocks of migrant land birds on their southward journeys’ - Joanne Hodgkins, a Wildlife and Countryside Advisor for the National Trust.

  • Why does this happen at Lizard Point?

‘The Lizard, in Cornwall – where the waves of the sea thrash the cliffs below and members of the bird kingdom chatter above as they make their great migration...’ - Joanne Hodgkins

Quite simply, because of its geological location. In some winters, almost 250 million redwings and fieldfares (the winter thrushes) spend the season in the UK, having travelled from as far afield as Scandinavia, Russia, and Iceland.

But at any time of the year it’s the perfect location to experience some of the most diverse and interesting examples of British birdlife, coupled with the chance to find rare plants.
